The Paris 2024 Olympic Games officially got under way with a glittering opening ceremony at the newly-refurbished Stade de France. In which popular French culture, history and art were exemplified in view of the competitions that would then ensue. The parade of nations showcased competitors from more than 200 countries marching in front of an exuberant crowd, encapsulating the ethos of goodwill and sportsmanship that is crucial to these multi-discipline global events.

Top Moments: Record-Setting Performances in the Pool

Regional Swim Swimming has been highlighted during the first week with a few world records falling. Existing powers like the United States and Australia reigned in the pool, boasting a blend of old guard excellence as well as fresh young talent.

There were also two world records on day one with Caeleb Dressel of the USA making headlines in teh 100m butterfly and nfreeing up his strokes for a 50m free assault later. His blistering pace and relentless drive to the line fired crowds from lands afar. Australia's Ariarne Titmus (L) broke the world record for 200m freestyle, having already claimed a surprise win over American great Katie Ledecky on day one.

Gymnastics: New Stars Emerge

Gymnastics tends to elicit an air of drama around it, and Paris 2024 has not been different. Both artistic and rhythmic gymnastics have seen a glut of rising stars break onto the world scene through narrow competition.

Returning from her break Simone Biles exhibited immense talent and resilience, taking the gold in an all-around competition. But ultimately, it was Brazil's Rebeca Andrade who captivated the hearts of fans with her near-flawless routines on vault and floor exercise to clinch a pair of gold medals -- proving she is definitely one to watch when gymnastics eventually returns.

The first week of track and field has been defined by business as usual in the form of some well-publicized victories, but also a number of unexpected results. A new Olympic champion was crowned over the iconic 100m dash.

The biggest shock of all came in the men's 100m, when Italy's Lamont Marcell Jacobs ran down American favorite Fred Kerley to become the first man from his country ever to win gold over that distance. Jamaica's Elaine Thompson-Herah also retained her title in the women's final, further establishing herself as perhaps the most powerful female sprinter ever.

The men's long jump produced a surprise gold with Miltiadis Tentoglou winning on countback of his concluding hop, step and leap over favourite Juan Miguel Echevarría (Cuba) whilst the trio Tony McQuay USA:400m evaded him once more as he resigned himself to another silver forcing home by eight hundredths.
